Coyote
Early in the morning,
Before the sun is fully up,
Coyote returns to his den
Beneath the bramble thicket
Across the field from the house.
He has roamed the night
Searching for prey
And coyote companions.
Upstairs in my bedroom,
I hear the “yip,yip,yip”
Of coyote cadences
Sending secret messages
To coyote companions.
But, when he comes
To steal the chickens,
He is as silent as death.
