I Am the River
I am the river
hear my voice -‐
low gurgling laughter
of rock meeting water
the rush and hiss
as I plunge blindly
into shallow blue-‐green pools
finding my way to the sea
I am the river
see how trout glide
inside of me -‐
gold-‐flecked stones
in motion
watch shy dragonflies
dip and dance
on my glassy surface
all jewel wing and shadow
I am the river
walk in me -‐
feel my slick stones
caress your soles
let the cool soft mud
slip between toes
let your warm salted tears
slide away from you
I am the river
know me -‐
daughter
of ancient glaciers
and sudden spring rains
sister
of a thousand thunderstorms
and all the tears of your fathers
