Editor at Midnight
Time is up! Why is it so hard to make
room for what we love?
Tinkering with words
making the right sounds
hum wildly.
Everyone else seems to come
first, this student, that child,
the cleaning lady, or this
class that has nothing to do with
how to say a thousand petals open
in your eyes when you read your poem.
What I have been trying to say is this;
every moment is precious, and only
you can write down your words in your own way,
and I want to hear how you phrase things
I want to have you make time with
those words precious to you,
because if you don’t do it, the world will
not have your essence in their hands
leafing the pages you so carefully crafted.
I want the world to see what you have to offer
because only you have that mixture of Southern
drawl and Northern California ease in your
writing. We need another take on the moon
despite the millions of poems written about it.
Is it a shell, a spoon, a bright coin,
a leaf , a bite out of an Oreo cookie?
Sing it babe, it is what must come, and I cannot
make the time for you, but if I don’t mark off time a little bit,
your words will not be heard. It is time, sing it open
let those fractured stories slide down and melt
into those poems you craft, and then we can talk about
how mean I was, when all I want is for you to shine
like that opal orb in that midnight sky.
