Waking to Sunshine, Pancakes, Coffee and Redwoods

In the coldest hour at dawn
sunshine warms the vinyl of the tent.

My face turns to face the east
in answered prayer,

hips ache, toss and turn works
for a while. I rise

start a fire, hands stretch skyward
redwoods elevating my vision,

like a raised drawbridge
stops traffic,

disposition up,
half a jumping-jack,

aromas of pancakes
and coffee awake

and I feel pristine,
refreshed, body

immaculate, as woodsmoke
swirls about my face.

The Color

The cherry of tomatoes hidden
behind the bright green romaine
my young daughter compares
with her painted fingernails
keeping her hands crossed
both enamored of her enamel beauty
and the desire to conceal
her youth and vibrancy.
