Landscape, Bereaved

The earth is so arid
sand seems to bleed
as if purged by a blistering sun
spot of heat so intense
the canvas blackens
near where the horizon
meets the leached-of-all-
color stones; in the distance,
Desolation Mountains are scars
etched into the sky.

Landscape

Clouds pass close over
a valley exhorting snow

to fall inside a Chinese
scroll; thin lined trees,

swaying bridges breeching
gaps, an anxious landscape,

where dreams gather,
shadows fall

Alan Catlin has a new book out, Still Life with Apocalypse from Sheila Na Gig Editions.  Coming soon: Wearing a Dead Man's Clothes: Meditations from Dos Madres.
