On this winter day
a river riots through my yard
The once-dry stream rushes
with seasonal wrath
a water dug trench
deeply carved cleft
spends a life force
trying to cheat
this high desert
I sip herbal tea
as serpent surges
with sound of fury
floods my land-locked
reverence for all
things in transition
I am reminded then
that even eons of rock
are changed by water
Diane Funston served as Poet-in-Residence for Yuba Sutter Arts and Culture for two years. She created and hosted online “Poetry Square” monthly, bringing together poets from around the world on Zoom. She has been published in F(r)iction, Lake Affect Magazine, Synkronicity and California Quarterly among many others. Her chapbook Over the Falls was published by Foothills Publishing in 2022. She lives in the small town of Marysville California A town developed in the days of the Gold Rush. The town is at the confluence of three rivers and is surrounded by a levee.
