Eating an Apple in the Hospital Bathroom
I look at the little Macintosh,
red and green on my beside table.
My mouth waters!
I sigh at not being able
to walk unsupervised
on my walker.
Can I maneuver this wheelchair
into the restroom to wash the apple?
I set the apple on my lap,
roll around the bed.
Oh, back up! No, once more!
Now I can open the door.
I rinse my snack.
Roll back? No!
Hands will be dirty again
from those wheels.
I’ll eat it right here!
My mouth puckers.
Tart the way I like it!
I grin, eating forbidden fruit.
