Joe Cottonwood

1/19/2026

Earth Karma

It helps to have a grandchild
to remind you that the air you breathe
once was gas in the intestine
of a brontosaurus.

If you’re lucky she will tell you
that the water vapor
condensing on the window
was H2O before there was
any life on Earth and then
there were trilobites and
then so we could see nature
we built windows with the sweaty glass
where her finger draws a smiley face.

Joe Cottonwood has repaired hundreds of houses to support his writing habit among the redwood trees in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. His newest book of poetry is “buck naked is the opposite of hate” from Sheila-Na-Gig Press.
