1. Introduction

To Readers of Monterey Poetry Review:

I sometimes think editing a poetry magazine is like panning for gold. Most of the poems submitted probably wouldn’t make it, but once in a while you can shake out some very special ones.  The little flecks of gold in the pan are called colors.

In this issue of Monterey Poetry Review there are many colorful poems from the death pieces of D. N. Simmers, Dan Phillips, and Kent Leatham to love poems of Kate Avraham, Greg Candela, and Simon Peter Eggertson.

Some are set locally, as in Eggertson’s Butterfly Kisses, Jennifer Lagier’s three short lyrics, and Greg Candela’s Heartbreakers; some are spiritual as in Dane Cervine’s The Mystical Stand-Up Comedian; others contain social criticism as in Brian Shefflield’s Fourteen year old Racquel.

Poems by two different poets are titled Still Life, one a powerful poem about an accident by Ellen McCarthy; the other a riff on old age nursing home life by George Lober, the latter especially poignant to me because most of mine and my wife’s close relatives ended their lives in such places.

There are others worth writing about, some light-hearted literary gems; others following surreal canons. But my purpose is not to list all the poems and poets in this issue; only to give a sampling of what’s here.

I believe there’s real gold here, poems whose colors will gleam for you as you uncover them, just as they did for me. Take a look and I believe you will be led to read further in this issue. It will be well worth your time.

John
