1. Introduction

To Readers of Monterey Poetry Review:

Pablo Neruda wrote, You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep Spring from coming.  This quote certainly captures the bittersweet quality of moving into a season signifying a time of rebirth and rejuvenation after undergoing an election leaving our country even more divided than before. As war continues to rage in Ukraine and Middle East, as yet another mass shooting occurs and domestic terrorism is on the rise, it often seems as if our world is coming to a violent end.

As an antidote to hopelessness and despair, let the work in this issue help lift your spirits, heal your heart while acknowledging injustice and loss. Victor Henry’s poetry of witness chronicles the horrors of war. Nanci Woody’s work laments a country who would elect a convicted felon over a capable woman. In contrast, John Grey’s poetry celebrates nature and Chris Wood’s work offers a sense of resilience and hope. The Spring 2025 issue of Monterey Poetry Review showcases poets and artists from all over the world. Together, they provide diverse perspectives, a range of observations and emotions. Their words and images help feed our souls.
