1. Introduction

To Readers of Monterey Poetry Review:

I didn’t reject many of the poems that were submitted for this issue; they all had won the approval of editors and deserve to be republished and remembered.

I can see why some of them won prizes. I kept wanting to return to a few and read them again for enjoyment and enlightenment,

I’ll not single out which ones I favor; you will have your own choices. Their quality, in my opinion, varies from very good to magnificent.

Some had appeared in quite prestigious journals but that didn’t mean they were necessarily the best of the lot.  Often editors prefer certain styles or subject matters and accept on those bases which eliminate many wonderful poems.

I do think you poets interested enough to read this issue of MPR should try to publish your work.
In my view, each poem is an attempt to communicate and very little communication can happen without publication.

So keep sending your work out and don’t be discouraged by rejections. I get my poems rejected over ninety percent of the time and I still persist.

I believe poetry, good poetry, exists in abundance. It’s just a matter of finding a home for it.
Is poetry important? I’ve included two of my published pieces which might shed some light on that.

John
