1. Introduction

To Readers of Monterey Poetry Review:

The poems in this issue make me think of several things mentioned and some only implied. Being on Monterey Bay and inspired thereby, we feature several ocean poems, fishing, surfing, and just being there with Lucas Seastrom, Joanna Martin, and others lending their talents.  We also have poems about art; it works sometimes for poets to latch onto images in paintings and make them their own as Alan Catlin does.  We  feature one strictly formal poem by Vickie Weaver, about a rose peeking out of poison oak (think of that powerful symbolism!) And with two of her photos!

But you’ll not have to wade through poison oak to appreciate the works here. Rose Mary Boehm mentions passwords, which is appropriate because this issue is loaded with them whether or not they’re called that. Another theme is the play of reality versus fantasy, David Iribarme speaks about his father who’s faced with the daunting reality of a deteriorating partner, the ancient theme of being there with someone not quite there.

In this issue of our little journal you will find poems that raise important questions, verses you can ponder, works that have the pith of reality, the force of energy, the glow of fantasy, even perhaps a touch of ecstasy. Some satisfy our “rage for order” while others gratify a need for well-thought-out “disorder”, which, as in fractals, is itself a type of order, just on a less obvious level. The issue’s balanced between right and left brain values, the yin and yang, or as Western literature has it, the classical and romantic spirits. Enjoy!
