Monterey Marina
Wan sun rays reach toward silver bay
through muddled layers of fog,
illuminate anchored sailboats,
snoozing harbor seals arched
like cupped hands upon scattered rocks.
Fishermen come ashore
for steaming black coffee,
to refill propane canisters,
make use of public showers.
After rollicking days of rodeo waves
they reunite with dry land.

Descent
Roots of a wind-warped cypress
insinuate themselves into crevices
of succulent cloaked granite.
Weathered stairs angle in louvered descent
from dun-hued adobe bluff trail
to storm-exposed bedrock slabs.
Like worn shoreline, we persevere,
hang on and endure, survive what bashes,
leaves scars, secret remnants of hope.
Piled driftwood forms a flimsy shelter,
shields a sand-sculpted peace symbol
outlined by artistic filigree of broken shells.

Stone Cottage at Sunrise
Encircled by hobbit fence
of driftwood calligraphy,
Custer House broods
among twisted cypress.
Sinister hawks patrol,
scour curving beach strand,
commute between rustic stone walls,
nearby Tor Tower.
Rising sun gilds gnarled branches,
wind-deformed trunks,
illumines bohemian village,
fairytale cottages, secretive forest.
