Higher Ground

“I swear I will not dishonor my soul with hatred.” –Diane Ackerman

When inflammatory headlines
foment frustration, infect the heart,
transform tranquility into lunacy,
it’s time for a ramble
through wetlands, along beach strand
to calm the soul, restore damaged spirit.

I meander among willows,
admire tangled blackberries,
recite the serenity prayer as a mantra
to return me to reason.
Geese, expecting a handout,
waddle in my wake,
a feathered, obese congregation.

Bright-eyed ducklings glide,
upon tule fringed pond.
Sunny meadow, silver sycamores
bring jangled world back into balance.
Fog rises like prayer.
