Stellar Jays
Big Sur’s sapphire delinquents
screech abrasive epithets,
roost on pine limbs
surrounding canopied tables
on Nepenthe’s back deck.
Swift thieves dart,
snatch Ambrosia burger scraps,
fallen fries,
chunks of sourdough bread.
Wait staff carry spray bottles,
spritz ice water showers
to rudely rebuff
brazen avian robbers.
Disgruntled blue bandits persist,
pester diners,
pilfer wilted lettuce,
abandoned blackberries,
crumbs of leftover quiche.
