Spellbound

Fallow garden marvel--
one voluntary stalk
lush and leafy green
against latticework fence.

Mexican sunflower,
tangerine daisy,
sunlit prism, orange torch,
radiates, Look at me!

Clippers in hand
I reach to snip
for table decoration
to capture the fire opal.

Then black-veined Monarch
hidden among the leaves,
hovers and settles and treats
herself to the sun-centered nectar.

Sylvan Concerto

Ginkgo leaves shimmy
like an exotic dancer

bouncing in the wind,
tossed to and fro

by an internal rhythm.
They entice me,

beckon me to float across barriers,
invite worlds and words

to undulate.
I cannot ignore their bidding

so I close my eyes,
push the porch swing higher

and leave the jay
to strut on the banister.

When my eyes open,
I see lemon-gold trees sway

in choreographed flutters
against a turquoise sky.
