1. Introduction

To Readers of Monterey Poetry Review:

A Native American proverb says, “Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.” Another tells us, “Take only what you need and leave the land as you found it.”

UNESCO states, “Climate denial has increased the risk of catastrophic global change. Should international criminal law be used against those who promote this dangerous trend? Economic and political leaders can no longer pretend it is business as usual. Whether they actively induce environmental harm or just ignore the existential threat against the survival of the human species, states and corporations must be held accountable for their actions or inaction regarding climate change.”

Our Spring 2022 issue of the Monterey Poetry Review offers poetry addressing the theme “One Earth, One Chance,” voices that celebrate nature’s fragile wonders, propose solutions to the planet’s demise, mourn environmental losses.

One of our contributors, Lynn Hansen, writes:

no incantation can undo the braid
between ecosystem and plunder of
of our sacred creation,
that before its collapse, trembles.

Let us not give up hope, however. As Margaret Mead once said, “Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have."

May this assemblage of poetic voices sound the call to action and remind us of what is at stake.
