1. Introduction

To Readers of Monterey Poetry Review:

It has been a brutal year—politics, pandemic, division. The local literary community lost one of its own—poet Marina Romani. As an antidote to despair, work chosen for inclusion by the editors reflects variations on the theme of positive transformations. We are pleased to include some new voices, images, and photography, representing artists and writers from throughout the United States. Thank you to the many talented people who contributed. Finally, stay safe and well!

In keeping with the spirit of the Fall 2020 issue of Monterey Poetry Review, we offer the following poem:

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting for their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world and am free.

 -- Wendell Berry
